Being of Polish decent and having hereditary high cholesterol, there are few recipes that I can eat. This being the holiday season, I had to publish my paternal grandmother’s favorite cookie recipe: Kolacky. This is not what you seem to find online now; those portions are huge. My dad and uncle would eat handfuls of these cookies when growing up as they were made so small and delicate by grandma. This recipe takes 2 days to make as you have to chill down the dough.
Here is a transcript of the original text:
Kolacky 400° - 10 minutes
Mix 2 1/2 C. flour minus 1 T (to be used for yeast)
1/2 t. salt 1/4 C. lard 1/2 C. butter
Add the 1 T. flour mixed with 1 cake yeast
mix lightly to size of peas.
Add 2 egg yolks, 2 T. sour cream
+ 1 t. vanilla.
Mix, roll in ball with a little
flour + put in wax paper.
Chill overnight.
Roll out dough fairly thin, cut squares
dd filling + fold over the 4 corners to the
middle. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet
10 minutes – 400 °. When cool, sprinkle
with powdered sugar.

Any filling may be used: nut, poppy,
prune, apricot, cheese – or any commercial
filling.
Nut filling
To 2 beaten egg whites add 1/2 C. sugar
+ fold in 1 C chopped nuts.
