sendmail as a SMTP-AUTH client

For a long time now, I’ve wanted to be able to generate mail from my computer at home, but because I’m behind a dynamic DHCP address, it is hard to have a resolvable hostname.  My hosting provider would not accept mail from a hostname that did not resolve.

The solution was to configure my MTA to be a SMTP-AUTH client to my hosting provider’s mail server.  The last time I googled for how to do this, all I kept finding was how to setup sendmail, the mail server software I’m using, as a SMTP-AUTH server.  Today, I took another crack at it and found exactly what I needed.  Not only did I find a good how to, it was from the sendmail.org site! http://www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/auth.html#smtpclient The instructions are very straightforward and I could not believe I had it working correctly on my first attempt.

Now I can have my home computer send me mail anywhere, anytime.
